About

The Vision is Clear, and The Journey Has Begun!

On October 10, 1865 Dr. Henry Martin Tupper and his wife “arrived in the city of Raleigh, North Carolina with the express purpose of laboring as missionaries on behalf of the colored people.” In February of 1866, Second Baptist Church was organized and land was deeded “beginning at the corner of Blount and Cabarrus Streets running south with Blount Street.” During the early spring, a building was erected to furnish accommodations for a school and Second Baptist Church.

The Second Baptist Church was demolished in 1912 and a new church erected and called the Blount Street Baptist Church. In 1940, the name was changed to Tupper Memorial Baptist Church in honor of its original organizer and pastor, Dr. Tupper.  From these humble beginnings, two institutions were born: the great Shaw University and the historic, Tupper Memorial Baptist Church.

Throughout its rich history, Tupper, as it is affectionately known, has undergone major physical and spiritual growth through the years.

Under the leadership of Dr. H. C. Miller, Senior Pastor, the ministry at Tupper has grown by leaps and bounds. Included in this growth are the establishment of noon-day Bible study, a senior adult ministry, a drama ministry, new members and spiritual partners classes, a youth ministry and a variety of other ministries. Weekly worship services are held each Sunday morning to accommodate the influx of new members and those who simply come to share in the “Tupper Experience.” The men’s and the women’s conferences provide additional opportunities for worshipers to come together and learn more about the Word of God.

We are a busy church, Bible-based and Spirit-led; preaching, teaching and proclaiming the “good news” of our risen savior Jesus Christ!

Tupper Memorial Baptist Church is affiliated with the General State Baptist Convention of NC, Wake Baptist Association, American Baptist ChurchesNational Baptist Convention USA and the Lott Carey Foreign Mission Convention.

At Tupper, you will experience “a blessed combination of genuine worship and sincere service.”

“Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world. Amen.” Matthew 28:19-20
